The Citizen Legacy: A Pioneer of Precision
Founded in 1918, Citizen is now one of the largest watch and movement groups in the world. The Japanese brand is known for its highly accurate and reliable Eco-Drive solar-powered watches. The Citizen group owns Bulova, Alpina, Frederique Constant, and Arnold & Son, as well as movement manufacturers Miyota and La Joux-Perret.

About the Homer Line

The Homer was Citizen’s dependable hand-wound line, produced through the 1960s and into the 1970s, and a staple of Citizen’s export catalogue. Where the Custom-range Seven Star and Crystal Seven chased the upper-middle market with automatic movements, the Homer kept things simple: a clean, legible manual-wind dress watch built to be reliable and affordable.

Homer models ran on Citizen’s manual-wind calibres, usually 17 or 21 jewels, in modest cases with restrained dials — some with a date window, many time-only. Export examples carried the international “Waterproof” and “Shockproof” markings rather than Citizen’s home-market “Parawater” and “Parashock” names.

For collectors, the Homer is a quiet favourite: unpretentious, easy to service, and a genuine piece of everyday 1960s Japanese horology. It’s the kind of honest vintage watch the Citizen name was founded to make.

About This Watch

This Citizen Homer (ref. HO 150802) dates to September 1962, decoded from its serial number 20902388. It is a home-market piece, wearing the domestic “Para Shock” and “Phynox” markings rather than the export-only “Shockproof” and “Waterproof” equivalents.

The silver sunburst dial is clean and time-only — no date, no day — with applied dagger indices that catch the light and slim dauphine hands. “Citizen Homer” appears in a flowing script at the top of the dial, with “17 Jewels” beneath it in a smaller serif font. At six o’clock, “PARA SHOCK” and “PHYNOX” are printed in a compact sans-serif, confirming the watch’s shock protection and the cobalt-based Phynox alloy used in its balance spring.

The case is stainless steel (“STAR” brand, as stamped on the case-back), roughly 34 mm across excluding the crown — a classic mid-century dress size. The case-back is smooth and snap-fitted, engraved with the reference and serial. The watch sits on a period-correct stainless steel link expansion bracelet which has extra links removed –  a replacement strap or bracelet recommended.

Inside runs one of Citizen’s reliable manual-wind calibres (the cal. 0200), beating at 18,000 BPH with 17 jewels — a straightforward, easy-to-service movement that’s been keeping time for over sixty years.

Condition Report

The dial is in good original condition for a watch from 1962. The silver sunburst finish with its characteristic radial brushing clearly visible, has some blemishes visible on 3 o’clock side. There is light patina and a few hairline marks consistent with age, particularly noticeable in certain angles of light, but no significant discolouration, corrosion or damage to the applied indices.

The stainless steel case is in solid condition with light wear marks on the case-back and some minor scratches on the case sides — all consistent with sixty-plus years of occasional use. The case retains its original proportions and polished surfaces.

The crystal shows light surface wear but no cracks or chips. The crown is original and operates smoothly. The stainless steel bracelet is in wearable condition with normal signs of age.

Watch went through a recent service by a professional watch technician and keeps good time.

Comes complete with vintage steel bracelet*.

(*)Note: Stock bracelets are often shortened by previous owners and may not fit you(see bracelet size in the product images). We recommend adding a new Citizen lug width matched leather strap with your order.

Why Collectors Want This Watch Today

This Homer is a clean example of Citizen’s hand-wound line from the early 1960s — a period when Japanese watchmaking was building momentum but still largely unknown outside Asia. Home-market pieces like this one, with their domestic “Para Shock” and “Phynox” markings, are harder to find internationally than their export equivalents and carry a certain authenticity that collectors appreciate.

The watch also represents excellent value: a well-built, professionally serviced manual-wind from 1962, on its original bracelet, at a price point that would barely cover a modern quartz fashion watch. For anyone starting a vintage Japanese collection or looking for an honest everyday wearer with real history behind it, the Homer is a natural choice.

About the watch factory

The Spirit of Innovation: The Citizen Legacy

Founded in 1918 with the mission of creating timepieces that are “Citizens” of the world, the Citizen Watch Company has spent over a century redefining the boundaries of horology. From its origins as the Shokosha Watch Research Institute, the brand has remained steadfast in its philosophy: “Better Starts Now.” This belief—that it is always possible to make something better—transformed a local Japanese workshop into a global powerhouse of precision and craft. By controlling the entire manufacturing process in-house, from the individual components to the final assembly, Citizen ensures an uncompromising standard of quality that few manufacturers on earth can match.
What truly sets Citizen apart is its relentless pursuit of pioneering technology paired with environmental consciousness. The brand made history by introducing the world’s first light-powered watch, the Eco-Drive, which eliminated the need for battery replacements and forever changed the industry’s approach to sustainability. Beyond its eco-friendly milestones, Citizen’s history is decorated with “world firsts,” including the first professional diving watch with an electronic depth sensor and the most accurate satellite-synchronized timekeeping systems. When you wear a Citizen, you aren’t just wearing a watch; you are wearing a piece of history engineered for the future.
Why Choose Citizen?
