Soviet shops where jeans, whiskey, and Marlboros existed. The catch? You couldn’t pay in rubles. Only dollars, marks, or special government checks. Capitalism behind a birch tree, comrades.
The Soviet Union banned ordinary people from holding foreign cash… but happily took it off their hands in Beryozka. Here, the shelves were full, the jeans were real, and the chocolate wasn’t Soviet. A workers’ paradise? Only if your uncle in New Jersey sent you money
Stepping into a Beryozka was like stepping through the Iron Curtain in reverse. Outside: gray queues for bread. Inside: shiny stereos, French perfume, Scotch whisky. Think duty-free, but with more KGB surveillance.
