Soviet mechanical Zaria wrist watch with date, 22 jewels
MADE IN USSR!
Zaria (Заря, meaning “Dawn”) with a champagne-gold dial finished in a fine vertical linen texture: dark applied-style baton markers with a double-width marker at 12, black baton hands and a slim centre seconds hand. The date sits in a framed window at 6 o’clock. The export dial is signed “ZARIA”, “22 JEWELS” and “MADE IN USSR”.
The cushion-shaped “TV” case is gold-plated – stamped Au5 on the case side – with a brushed top surface, polished bevelled flanks and a stainless steel snap-on case back.
Manufactured at the Penza Watch Factory, USSR. The case back number is a serial, not a date code; the design of the dial and case places this watch in the 1970s.
The watch is mechanical and does not need batteries to operate.
Original Soviet Zaria watch has mechanical lever movement and manual winding. Caliber 2014A (stamped on the crown wheel) is the Penza 22-jewel movement with centre seconds and date.

About the watch factory
In early 1930s there were already two functioning watch factories. In 1935 decision was made to build another factory to produce women’s watches.
After long negotiations french equipment LIP was purchased and the construction of factory begins in Penza(on Penza bicycle factory). In 1938 the first watches were produced.
The factory produced mainly womens watches of small caliber movements. However, some men’s watches were also produced.
All watches were branded “Zarya” only after 1965.
Other watches produced on the factory: «ЗИФ», «Звезда», «Победа», «Аврора», «Комета», «Мечта», «Весна», «Рассвет».
