Description

Poljot Soviet watch – 17 jewels with date

MADE IN USSR!

Movement manufactured on 1st Moscow Watch Factory “Poljot”

A Poljot from the factory’s export range, in a chrome cushion-shaped case that was typical of Soviet dress watches of the period. The black dial is signed POLJOT and 17 JEWELS in Latin letters, with silver Roman numerals at the hours, an outer 13–24 ring for the 24-hour time, a framed date window at 3 o’clock and MADE IN USSR at 6. Silver baton hands and a slim centre seconds hand complete the dial.

Inside is the 1st Moscow Watch Factory’s hand-wound caliber 2614.2H, stamped SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS, SU and 2614.2H next to the factory logo. The SU mark was used on Soviet movements made for export. The 2614.2H was one of the factory’s standard date calibers and is simple and easy to service.

The case is chrome-plated with a stainless steel snap-on case back, numbered 228185. The polished case shows light scratches from use, with a little plating wear at the edges of the lugs. The case back is scratched. The dial and hands are clean.

The watch is mechanical and does not need batteries to operate.

This watch has original Soviet mechanical lever movement and manual winding.

About the watch factory

1st Moscow Watch Factory (1.MWF, renamed to Poljot after 1964) – the biggest and oldest of Soviet watch factories.
Russian watches have a rich and interesting history dating back over 80 years with the creation of the First Moscow Watch Factory, which today manufactures Poljot watches.

A highlight of Russia’s watch history came in 1961 when cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin took the first ever flight into space with a watch from the First Moscow Watch Factory.

Poljot Brand History

Poljot watches are manufactured by the First Moscow Watch Factory. The factory began producing watches in 1930, and started using the Poljot brand name in 1964.

Poljot watches are higher-end Russian watches and cost more than most Russian watch brands. An average Poljot watch costs around $300. Some gold President-series Poljot watches sell for upwards of $10,000.

The Sturmanskie watch manufactured by the First Moscow Watch Factory has the distinction of being the first watch in space.

In 1966 the First Moscow Watch Factory was awarded the highest Soviet award, the Order of Lenin, for developing the national watch industry.

In 1992 the administration of the Russian president selected Poljot to be the rewarding watch from the President of the Russian Federation.

In recent years, the First Moscow Watch Factory scaled back production. Some of its equipment was purchased by Volmax, a Russian watch company launched by ex-Poljot employees. Volmax now uses the term “Poljot” for some of its watch movements.
