Description

Slava “Perestroika” quartz wrist watch – new old stock, with its passport

Slava quartz watch with a cream dial dominated by a large red star, with the word «ПЕРЕСТРОЙКА» (Perestroika – “restructuring”, the name of Gorbachev’s reform programme of the late 1980s) printed beneath it in bold black capitals. A ring of small red stars marks the hours around a printed minute track, with black hour and minute hands and a slim black centre seconds hand.

Lovely vintage watch made by the 2nd Moscow Watch Factory.

The dial is signed “Слава”, “КВАРЦ” (quartz) and “MADE IN USSR”. The angular chrome-plated case has a round bezel and a snap-on case back stamped with the number 451.

It comes with its factory passport for the Slava 2356 quartz watch, issued by MPO “Second Watch Factory”, Moscow (part of MGO “Chasprom”), to GOST 26272-84. The release date printed in the passport is 09.04.92 – 9 April 1992 – so this watch left the factory a few months after the Soviet Union was dissolved, still with a USSR-marked dial and Soviet-pattern passport. The watch number handwritten in the passport is 520, while the case back is stamped 451, so the passport is for this model but we cannot confirm it was issued for this exact watch. The shop-sale fields are blank and both warranty coupons are still attached.

The watch still carries its factory hang tag and comes with its original Slava blister pack – the printed “ЧАСЫ Слава” card and its clear plastic cover.

The watch is quartz and runs on a single button-cell battery.

Original Slava watch with quartz caliber 2356, an analogue quartz movement with a stepping motor, stamped “2356” with the 2nd Moscow factory logo on its bridge. According to the passport the 23mm movement runs off a 32,768 Hz quartz resonator, is rated to ±1 second a day at 20–30 °C, and one battery lasts at least 24 months. It shows hours, minutes and a centre seconds hand.

About the watch factory

Slava (Russian: Cлава, meaning “Glory”) watches were classic “civil” Russian watches commonly referred to as “Slava Lava!”.

The Slava factory (known originally as the Second Moscow Watch Factory) was the second non-military watch maker established in the Soviet Union, in 1924.

The watches of this brand have always been meant for civilian consumption, without military or aerospace pretensions. As of today the factory no longer produces.
