The leather that changes colour under your thumb
Crazy Horse is not a colour — it is a finish. The hide is saturated with wax and oil, so the top layer sits loose over the leather beneath it. Press it with a thumb, bend it around your wrist, twist it, and the wax moves aside: the stressed area lightens by a shade or two, then slowly settles back. Watchmakers call this the pull-up effect, and it is the entire point of this leather.
What that means once it is on your wrist:
- Marks are temporary. Every crease, scuff and fingernail scratch shows up as a lighter line. Rub it with your thumb — the warmth of your hand softens the wax and most marks close up and disappear.
- It ages into something personal. Over the first months the strap darkens and deepens, while the fold points at the lug and the buckle stay lighter. That contrast is the patina, and no two wrists produce the same one.
- No two straps are identical. Tone shifts across a single hide, so the strap you receive will be close to the photograph rather than a pixel match — lighter here, darker there, with the grain of the animal still readable.
Look at the lighter streaks running along the straps in our photographs. Those are not lighting artefacts and not flaws — that is simply where the leather was folded and flexed before the picture was taken. A week on the wrist and they will have moved somewhere else.
Colour variation, rub marks and a shifting surface are characteristic of Crazy Horse leather, not defects. If you want a strap that stays exactly as it left the workshop, choose one of the thirteen smooth-finish shades in the standard NATO Commander® version 2 range instead.

How it is made
- Cut, finished and hand stitched in our Ukrainian workshop — the same build as the rest of the NATO Commander® version 2 line, in a different leather.
- Heavy ecru thread, saddle stitched by hand around the keeper block, where a strap takes the most strain.
- COMMANDER® blind-debossed into the leather — pressed in, no ink, no printing that can wear off.
- Polished silver-tone buckle with two wire keeper loops.
- Raw, unpainted cut edges — the honest finish for a waxed hide, and one that will not crack or peel the way edge paint does.
- Tapered tip that slides through the keepers without bunching under the case.
- 18mm at the lugs, 260mm long (+/- 3mm) — fits most vintage and modern cases with an 18mm lug spacing.
Looking after it
- A thumb and a minute of rubbing is the whole maintenance routine for everyday marks.
- Keep it out of prolonged soaking. If it does get wet, blot it and let it dry away from direct heat — a radiator will drive the wax out and stiffen the leather.
- To bring the colour back after a year or two, work in a small amount of colourless leather wax or balm. Never use solvent-based cleaners or saddle soap on a waxed finish.
