Citizen mechanical wind-up alarm clock

MADE IN JAPAN The Citizen Legacy: A Pioneer of Precision Founded in 1918, Citizen is now one of the largest watch and movement groups in the world. The Japanese brand is known for its highly accurate and reliable Eco-Drive solar-powered watches. The Citizen group owns Bulova, Alpina, Frederique Constant, and Arnold & Son, as well as movement manufacturers Miyota and La Joux-Perret.

About Citizen Wind-Up Alarm Clocks

Alongside its wristwatches, Citizen sold clocks for the Japanese home through the post-war Showa decades. Before quartz took over, the everyday bedside alarm clock was a simple wind-up mechanical with a pin-lever escapement and a handful of jewels, and in the late 1960s and 1970s those clocks were dressed in the boldest shapes of the era: ovals, capsules and pod-like cases in plastic and metallised trim.

About This Clock

An oval Citizen mechanical alarm clock in true space-age style. The dark smoked-chrome oval bezel sits on a black plastic stand, framing a sunburst dial that fades from warm gold at the centre to deep brown at the edge. Twelve raised, polished baton markers each carry an orange-red stripe, and an inner minute track has luminous dots at the hours. The hour and minute hands have luminous inserts, with a thin centre alarm hand and a separate seconds hand. The dial is signed CITIZEN, “2 JEWELS ALARM CLOCK” and JAPAN.
The back is marked A-NO.51143 and JAPAN. It carries the folding wing key for winding, a knob marked PULL for setting the hands and the alarm, a −/+ regulator for fine-tuning the rate, and a red pin that switches the alarm off. The alarm sounds through the ring of grilled openings around the back panel. No production date is marked on the clock, so we do not give one.

Condition Report

The dial colour is rich and even and the markers are bright. There are a few fine marks on the dial surface near the “ALARM CLOCK” text and toward 6 o’clock, visible in the close-ups. The smoked-chrome bezel shows light wear and some small specks along its lower edge, and the black stand and back have light handling marks. See the photos for exact condition.

Why Collectors Want This Clock Today

Mid-century Japanese alarm clocks have become a design collectible in their own right, and this one has everything people look for: the oval pod shape, the smoked-chrome trim and a gold-to-brown sunburst dial with striped markers that could only come from the 1970s look. It is a working mechanical clock you wind by hand, with a proper bell alarm. Citizen made a great many alarm clocks, so this is not offered as a rarity; it is a striking, honest piece of Japanese desk design.

About the watch factory

The Spirit of Innovation: The Citizen Legacy Founded in 1918 with the mission of creating timepieces that are “Citizens” of the world, the Citizen Watch Company has spent over a century redefining the boundaries of horology. From its origins as the Shokosha Watch Research Institute, the brand has remained steadfast in its philosophy: “Better Starts Now.” This belief—that it is always possible to make something better—transformed a local Japanese workshop into a global powerhouse of precision and craft. By controlling the entire manufacturing process in-house, from the individual components to the final assembly, Citizen ensures an uncompromising standard of quality that few manufacturers on earth can match.
What truly sets Citizen apart is its relentless pursuit of pioneering technology paired with environmental consciousness. The brand made history by introducing the world’s first light-powered analogue watch — the Crystron Solar Cell of 1976, the technology Citizen later branded Eco-Drive, which eliminated the need for battery replacements and forever changed the industry’s approach to sustainability. Beyond its eco-friendly milestones, Citizen’s history is decorated with “world firsts,” including the first professional diving watch with an electronic depth sensor and the most accurate satellite-synchronized timekeeping systems. When you wear a Citizen, you aren’t just wearing a watch; you are wearing a piece of history engineered for the future. Why Choose Citizen?

  • In-House Manufacturing: Citizen designs and builds its own movements — its Miyota calibers are among the most widely used in the world.
  • Built to Last: Citizen engineered its 1960s–70s calibers to be serviced rather than discarded, which is why so many are still keeping good time today.
  • Heritage of Firsts: The first light-powered analogue watch (1976, the technology that became Eco-Drive), the first dive watch with an electronic depth sensor, and satellite-synchronised timekeeping.
