Vintage Soviet cigarette case with cosmos theme
MADE IN USSR!
Commemorating the flight of Vostok-1 on April 12th 1961. The gold-tone lid shows the Kremlin tower, a globe circled by the orbit of the «ВОСТОК» rocket, and the inscription «Первый в мире полет человека в космос – 12 апреля 1961 года» (The world’s first human flight into space – April 12, 1961).
On April 12, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space aboard the Vostok-1 spacecraft, orbiting the Earth once in a historic 108-minute flight, a major victory for the USSR in the Space Race and the start of the era of human spaceflight.
- The Flight: Vostok-1 lifted off from Baikonur, circled the Earth once and returned Gagarin safely to Soviet soil the same morning.
- Gagarin’s Status: The 27-year-old pilot became an instant global hero, was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union, and inspired many to dream of space.
- Significance: April 12 is still celebrated as Cosmonautics Day, and since 2011 as the International Day of Human Space Flight.
