About This Cigarette Case
A Soviet space-era souvenir cigarette case commemorating the flight of Vostok-1 on April 12, 1961. The lid carries a relief of Yuri Gagarin in his helmet, a rocket streaking diagonally across a star-filled sky, the curve of the Earth below and the letters CCCP (USSR). The gilt-toned inside of the lid repeats the same Gagarin-and-rocket scene, with the rocket named «ВОСТОК» and the flight date. The back is textured and scattered with stars, and the case closes with a brass-tone push clasp.
The Flight It Commemorates
On April 12, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space aboard the Vostok-1 spacecraft, completing a single orbit of the Earth in a flight of about 108 minutes.
- The Flight: Vostok-1 lifted off from Baikonur, circled the Earth once and returned Gagarin safely to Soviet soil the same morning.
- Gagarin: The 27-year-old pilot became an instant global hero and was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
- Significance: April 12 is still marked as Cosmonautics Day, and since 2011 as the International Day of Human Space Flight.

Condition Report
Good pre-owned condition. The hinge and clasp work, and the case closes securely. The outside shows light surface scratches from use, most visible on the smooth areas of the rocket and the Earth; the textured background is intact. The gilt-toned interior is clean with light wear. No dents are visible in the photos.
