About This Cigarette Case

A Soviet space-era souvenir cigarette case commemorating the flight of Vostok-1 on April 12, 1961. The silver-tone lid shows the Kremlin tower in red enamel on a globe, circled by a yellow enamel orbit and the red «ВОСТОК» rocket, framed by the inscription «Первый в мире полет человека в космос – 12 апреля 1961 года» (The world’s first human flight into space – April 12, 1961) on a guilloché-style background with a wavy border. The back carries the same diamond pattern, and the rose-tone interior holds the cigarettes under elastic bands.

The Flight It Commemorates

On April 12, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space aboard the Vostok-1 spacecraft, completing a single orbit of the Earth in a flight of about 108 minutes.

• The Flight: Vostok-1 lifted off from Baikonur, circled the Earth once and returned Gagarin safely to Soviet soil the same morning.
• Gagarin: The 27-year-old pilot became an instant global hero and was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
• Significance: April 12 is still marked as Cosmonautics Day, and since 2011 as the International Day of Human Space Flight.

Condition Report

Good pre-owned condition with honest wear. The hinge and clasp work, and the case closes securely. The red and yellow enamel is intact; the blue-filled lettering is partly worn. The outside shows light scratches and some darker tarnish spots, most visible on the back. The elastic bands inside are present.
