Featuring an enamelled rocket rising over the globe, with the launch date of Sputnik 3 – 15 МАЯ 1958 (May 15th 1958) – and CCCP on the lid.
On May 15, 1958, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 3, a large and sophisticated scientific satellite, into orbit from the Baikonur Cosmodrome.
- The Mission: Sputnik 3 was the third Soviet artificial satellite and the first “automatic orbital station”. It was originally meant to be the first Soviet satellite of the International Geophysical Year, but its complexity delayed it, and the much simpler Sputnik 1 and 2 flew first.
- The Satellite: A 1,327 kg (2,925 lb) cone-shaped scientific laboratory, the heaviest object put into orbit at that time.
- Instruments: Twelve scientific instruments to study the upper atmosphere and near-Earth space: pressure, composition, charged particles, cosmic rays and magnetic fields.
- Outcome: The launch was a success, although a failure of the onboard tape recorder limited how much of its data could be collected.
- Relevance: The launch came at the height of the Space Race and was a significant display of Soviet technological capability. Sputnik 3 remained in orbit until April 6, 1960.
