Description

Soviet Raketa perpetual calendar mechanical wrist watch

MADE IN USSR!

Raketa (Ракета, meaning “Rocket”) with a blue dial that lightens towards the edge in daylight, square bronze-tone applied markers at the hours, silver baton hands and a silver centre seconds hand. The dial is signed «РАКЕТА» and reads «СДЕЛАНО В СССР» (Made in USSR). The day and date sit in a framed window at 3 o’clock, with the day disc in Russian (ВСК = Sunday).

The dial carries a perpetual-calendar table: a grid of weekdays and dates across the top, and a month table above a rotating year ring at 6 o’clock, turned by the second crown at 4 o’clock. Line up the current year and month and the table tells you which weekday falls on which date.

The chrome-plated case is round with broad faceted shoulders at the lugs, with a plain steel snap-on case back stamped with the number 481.

Manufactured at the Petrodvorets Watch Factory. The dial still reads «СДЕЛАНО В СССР», while the year ring is printed for the 1990s (1992 to 1998 are visible), which places this watch at the very end of the Soviet era.

The watch is mechanical and does not need batteries to operate.

Original Soviet Raketa watch has mechanical lever movement and manual winding. Caliber 2628.H (the bridge is stamped 2628 with the Petrodvorets factory logo) is the Petrodvorets 19-jewel movement with centre seconds and a day / date calendar.

CASE SIZE approx. 42x42mm (with crown)

LUG WIDTH 18mm

TYPE Mechanical

CONDITION: The dial is clean, with the print and the calendar tables complete and legible; the bronze-tone hour markers have darkened with age (see the close-up photos). The polished chrome case front presents well. On the underside, the chrome plating is worn around the case back, with corrosion spots along the edge and at the case-back opening notch. The steel case back and the bracelet have light scratches from use.

This watch has recently been serviced by a professional watchmaker and keeps good time.

Comes complete with a vintage steel bracelet.

About the watch factory

The Petrodvorets Watch Factory «Raketa» was founded by Peter the Great in 1721. Factory was producing wide range of items, including jewels for watches since 1930.
Factory was devastated during World War 2, restored in 1949 and was making “Pobeda”(Victory) and “Zvezda” watches. In 1954 renamed into Petrodvorets Watch Factory.
Since 1962 “Raketa” watches are produced which became the trade mark of the factory.

The Petrodvorets Watch Factory is one of the rare watch factories in the world that fully manufactures its own movements from A to Z, including hairspring and escapement.

Other band names produced on the factory include Baltika, Leningrad, Mayak, Neva, Pobeda, Raketa, Rossiya, Svet, Start.

Read more about on of few surviving Soviet watch factories on factory’s website.
