“Seiko” (精工) is a Japanese word meaning “precision,” “exquisite workmanship,” or “refined craftsmanship.”
It comes from the characters:

  • 精 (sei) – fine, precise, refined
  • 工 (ko) – craft, workmanship

Originally, Seiko’s watchmaking division was called Seikosha (精工舎), meaning “House of Precision.”
The name first appeared on a watch dial in 1924, shortened from Seikosha and keeping the core meaning; the company itself was renamed Hattori Seiko in 1983 and Seiko Corporation in 1990.

So the brand name literally ties directly to the idea of precision engineering—which is exactly what the company wanted to be known for in its watches.

About the Seiko Perpetual Calendar Quartz Line

Seiko’s Perpetual Calendar quartz watches solved an old problem with new tools. In a mechanical watch a perpetual calendar is a stack of cams and levers that has to remember the length of every month, and it is one of the most expensive things a watchmaker can build. Seiko’s answer was to hand the job to electronics: a C-MOS-LSI circuit holds the calendar, a step motor drives the hands, and a second, dedicated motor drives the calendar display on its own.

The result behaves the way a perpetual calendar should. The date never needs correcting at the end of a 30-day month, and February sorts itself out in leap years — Seiko programmed the calendar through 28 February 2100. A pusher next to the crown steps the display through the current year, month and date, so you can check what the watch believes the date to be without disturbing the time.

The family ran through the 1990s and 2000s across a wide range of cases, and the same caliber 6A32 later appeared under the Seiko Premier badge in the SNQ references.

About This Watch

This is reference 6A32-00W0, serial 2N6963. Seiko’s serial encodes November as the production month; the leading digit gives only the last figure of the year, which places this watch in November 2002.

The dial is black, with applied polished baton markers, a red central seconds hand and the printed line PERPETUAL CALENDAR / 100M above six o’clock. The calendar frame sits at three o’clock: instead of a single date window it shows a short column of numerals with a red index, which is what allows the same aperture to display the year and the month during the checking sequence. The dial foot is marked MOV’T JAPAN 6A32-01AB.

The stainless steel case carries a fluted crown at three and a separate round pusher at two — that pusher is the calendar button. The crystal is sapphire, and the screw-type case-back is engraved SAPPHIRE CRYSTAL, WATER RESISTANT 10 BAR, STAINLESS STEEL and MOVEMENT JAPAN 6A32-00W0.

Inside is Seiko’s caliber 6A32: a quartz movement with no jewels, running at 32,768 Hz, rated to ±20 seconds per month and about four years on an SR927SW cell. It carries a battery-life indicator — the seconds hand begins moving in two-second steps when the cell is nearly flat — and it hacks, the seconds hand stopping at twelve when the crown is pulled fully out.

It comes on its Seiko bracelet, with a signed SEIKO clasp and 517-marked end links.

Condition Report

The black dial is clean and even, with no visible marks, staining or lifting of the printing, and the applied markers are bright. The sapphire crystal is clear.

The case shows the light surface scratching you would expect from wear, most visible on the polished flanks and around the bezel, with the usual opening marks on the case-back. Nothing is dented or misshapen, and the original brushed and polished finishes are still cleanly separated.

The bracelet carries the heaviest wear on the watch: the clasp cover is noticeably scratched and the links show fine scuffing throughout. It is sound and closes securely.

### Setting the calendar

**Most of the time, you don’t.**
The calendar is programmed through **28 February 2100**. It knows which months are short and it knows leap years, so the date never needs correcting — not at the end of February, not ever. Set it once and forget it.

Your watch has two controls: the **crown** at 3 o’clock, and a small round **pusher** just above it at 2 o’clock. That pusher is the calendar button. The date sits in the frame at 3 o’clock, where a red index marks the live number.

## Setting the time and date

1. Wait until the seconds hand reaches **12**, then pull the crown all the way out (second click). The seconds hand stops.
2. Turn the crown either way to set the time and date.
3. Push the crown fully back in on a time signal.

Two things worth getting right:

– **Check AM/PM.** The date flips at midnight, so a 12-hour error puts the date a day out. As you advance the hands past the 1 o’clock marker: if the date changes, you’re in the AM half; if it doesn’t, you’re in PM.
– **Overshoot the minutes** by 4–5 minutes, then bring the hand back to the exact minute.

## Re-setting the calendar itself

You only need this after a battery change, or if the date is still wrong once AM/PM is correct.

> **Don’t do this between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m.** Move the hands to another time first, set the calendar, then put the time back.

1. Pull the crown out to the **first** click.
2. **Hold the button for 2 seconds.** The seconds hand goes to 12 and the frame shows **1**.
*If the hand isn’t exactly on 12, nudge it with the crown — one second per click.*
3. **Press the button once.** The numeral swings and settles, still showing **1**.
*If it doesn’t, turn the crown until 1 sits centred in the frame.*
4. **Press once — date.** Seconds hand moves to 9 o’clock. Turn the crown to today’s date.
5. **Press once — month.** Seconds hand moves to 10 o’clock. Turn the crown to the month, 1 to 12.
6. **Press once — year.** Seconds hand moves to 11 o’clock. Turn the crown to the last two digits of the year — **26** for 2026.
7. **Push the crown fully in.** The watch resumes and the frame returns to today’s date.

If you pause for more than 2–3 minutes partway through, the watch gives up and resumes normal running. Just start again from step 1.

## Good to know

– **Battery:** Seiko SR927SW, roughly 4 years. When the seconds hand starts moving in **2-second jumps**, the battery is nearly flat. Timekeeping stays accurate, but the date will stop changing — replace it soon.
– **Never leave the crown pulled out** during normal wear. It drains the battery.
– **Wait for the numeral to stop moving.** Neither the button nor the crown responds while it’s still travelling.
– **Accuracy:** ±20 seconds per month.
– **After 2032**, the year number stops matching the last two digits — the display cycles on a 28-year leap pattern, and you’ll need Seiko’s year table to read it. Until then, the number shown is simply the year’s last two digits.
