Seiko 5 Sports launched in June 1968, and it came out of both of Seiko’s watch houses at once: five of the first seven models were Suwa-built, the other two Daini. It took the existing Seiko 5 formula and added what a sports watch of the period needed—higher water resistance, a hardened crystal, and on many models a rotating bezel.

The “5” in the name represents a promise of five essential attributes that set the gold standard for value and durability:

1. Automatic winding (no batteries or manual winding required).
2. Day/date display integrated into a single window.
3. Water resistance for active lifestyles.
4. Recessed crown at the 4 o’clock position for comfort and protection.

Product Description
This is a Seiko 5 Sports 6119-8130, made in July 1968, a month after Seiko launched the 5 Sports line. The dial is marked “WATER 70 PROOF” — the wording Seiko used on these cases before it moved to “Water Resist” around the turn of the 1970s.
The dial is black, ringed by the silver blocked minute track that gives these references their rally look. The applied baton indices and the hands carry lume that has aged to a warm cream, and the sweep-seconds hand is red with a lollipop counterweight. The case is stainless steel in the cushion shape Seiko used across the early 5 Sports range.
The movement is Seiko’s cal. 6119B, built at Suwa: 21 jewels, 21,600 bph and roughly 40 hours of reserve. It is automatic only — no hand-winding and no hacking — and the date is quick-set by pressing the crown in, while the day is advanced by cycling the hands past midnight. The crown sits at 4 o’clock, recessed into the case flank.
Condition Note: The case is unpolished, retaining its original brushed surfaces and sharp bevels, with light wear and a few small marks around the bezel edge. The dial is in excellent condition, and the movement is clean, displaying the finishing typical of the Suwa Seikosha factory.
