“Seiko” (精工) is a Japanese word meaning “precision,” “exquisite workmanship,” or “refined craftsmanship.”
It comes from the characters:

Originally, Seiko’s watchmaking division was called Seikosha (精工舎), meaning “House of Precision.”
The name first appeared on a watch dial in 1924, shortened from Seikosha and keeping the core meaning; the company itself was renamed Hattori Seiko in 1983 and Seiko Corporation in 1990.
So the brand name literally ties directly to the idea of precision engineering—which is exactly what the company wanted to be known for in its watches.
🕰️ The Seiko 5 Sports line overview
Seiko 5 Sports launched in June 1968, and it came out of both of Seiko’s watch houses at once: five of the first seven models were Suwa-built, the other two Daini. It took the existing Seiko 5 formula and added what a sports watch of the period needed—higher water resistance, a hardened crystal, and on many models a rotating bezel.
The “5” in the name represents a promise of five essential attributes that set the gold standard for value and durability:
- Automatic winding (no batteries or manual winding required).
- Day/date display integrated into a single window.
- Water resistance for active lifestyles.
- Recessed crown at the 4 o’clock position for comfort and protection.

A December 1970 “Proof” example
This is a Seiko 5 Sports 7019-6020 from December 1970, serial 0D1212. It is a “Proof/Proof” watch: the dial reads “WATER 70m PROOF” and the case back is stamped “WATERPROOF”. Seiko began replacing “Proof” with “Water Resist” on export models from about mid-1970, after U.S. advertising rules on the word tightened; Japanese-market watches kept the older wording longer, which is what a December 1970 “Proof” dial reflects.
The Heart of the Watch: Caliber 7019
Inside is the Seiko 7019A: 21 jewels, 21,600 bph, wound by Seiko’s “Magic Lever” system. Like the rest of the 70xx family it is automatic only — it neither hand-winds nor hacks. It was built by Daini Seikosha, whose lightning-bolt mark appears on both the dial and the case back. The day wheel is the Japanese-market bilingual type, switching between kanji and English.
Iconic Design & Presence
The case is a stainless steel cushion, 41mm across, with the crown set into the flank at 4 o’clock. The dial is glossy black beneath a sloped minute ring, with the “SPORTS” line printed in blue, printed Arabic numerals, square lume plots and an orange sweeping seconds hand.

Condition Report:
This timepiece is in honest, original vintage condition. The “Proof” caseback is clearly legible. The dial is clean, with no moisture damage and no lume rot; the lume plots and hand fills have aged to a warm cream. The case and case back carry light vintage marks from wear. The movement is clean and starts instantly upon movement.

Seiko Group Corporation (セイコーグループ株式会社, Seikō Gurūpu kabushiki gaisha), commonly known as Seiko, is a Japanese maker of watches, clocks, electronic devices, and semiconductors. Founded in 1881 by Kintarō Hattori in Tokyo, Seiko introduced the world’s first commercial quartz wristwatch in 1969.
Seiko is widely known for its wristwatches. Seiko is one of the few watch companies that is fully vertically integrated.
