Description

Raketa World Traveler (Goroda) mechanical wrist watch with 24-hour dial and Russian world-time city ring

MADE IN RUSSIA

A true 24-hour watch: the hour hand goes round the dial once a day, with the odd hours 1 to 23 numbered and a baton marker at every hour. The silver sunburst dial is signed «РАКЕТА» (Raketa) in black, with «Сделано в России» (Made in Russia) printed in the lower half of the dial. Black hour and minute hands and a black centre seconds hand.

Around the dial runs a white world-time ring printed in Russian with 24 cities, one for each time zone: Moscow, Saratov, Yekaterinburg, Tashkent, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Yakutsk, Vladivostok, Magadan, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Wellington, Samoa, Honolulu, Alaska, San Francisco, Denver, Chicago, New York, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Reykjavik, Dakar, London and Geneva. The second crown turns the ring: set your home city against the current hour and the dial shows the time everywhere else at a glance.

The round chrome-plated case has a black bezel, angular lugs and two crowns on the right side: the upper one winds and sets the watch, the lower one turns the city ring. Plain steel snap-on case back stamped with the number 853.

Manufactured at the Petrodvorets Watch Factory. The dial reads «Сделано в России» while the movement still carries the “SU” (Soviet Union) stamp, which places this watch in the 1990s, the years just after the USSR dissolved.

The watch is mechanical and does not need batteries to operate.

Original Raketa watch has mechanical lever movement and manual winding. Caliber 2623.H (stamped on the wheel together with the factory logo and “SU”) is the Petrodvorets 24-hour movement with centre seconds.

About the watch factory

The Petrodvorets Watch Factory «Raketa» was founded by Peter the Great in 1721. Factory was producing wide range of items, including jewels for watches since 1930.
Factory was devastated during World War 2, restored in 1949 and was making “Pobeda”(Victory) and “Zvezda” watches. In 1954 renamed into Petrodvorets Watch Factory.
Since 1962 “Raketa” watches are produced which became the trade mark of the factory.

The Petrodvorets Watch Factory is one of the rare watch factories in the world that fully manufactures its own movements from A to Z, including hairspring and escapement.

Other band names produced on the factory include Baltika, Leningrad, Mayak, Neva, Pobeda, Raketa, Rossiya, Svet, Start.

Read more about on of few surviving Soviet watch factories on factory’s website.
