About the Weekly Auto AAA Line
The Orient Weekly Auto AAA line represents Orient’s push into the “everyman’s automatic” market of the 1960s — a day-date dress watch aimed at the growing Japanese middle class during the country’s postwar economic boom.
“Weekly” refers to the day-of-week display (a genuine convenience feature in the 1960s), “Auto” to the automatic winding movement, and “AAA” to the grade printed on the dial — the top of Orient’s own A / AA / AAA designation.
The in-house automatic movement inside these watches was built entirely by Orient, in keeping with its long-standing identity as a manufacturer that never relied on outsourced calibers even at accessible price points. About This Watch
This example is a Weekly Auto Orient AAA from around 1970, its case-back stamped G319114-70 beneath Orient’s crowned twin-lion crest and the legend “All Stainless Steel — Water Proof.” Inside is Orient’s in-house automatic caliber 1935, a 19-jewel movement (engraved “ORIENT 1935 19J” on the rotor and shown in these photos), driving central hands and a day-date display framed at 3 o’clock with an English day wheel.
The draw here is the dial: a deep blue finished with fine vertical linen brushing, which reads near-navy in flat light and brightens as the light crosses it, set with applied faceted baton markers and a printed “AAA / 19 Jewels” signature beneath the Orient logo. The cushion-shaped stainless steel case pairs brushed top surfaces with polished flanks and wears a plain, flat bezel — a cleaner, more restrained look than the fluted-bezel-and-cyclops AAA variants of the era. It comes on a vintage stainless steel bracelet with Orient’s distinctive hexagonal-link pattern.

The blue linen-brushed dial is clean and bright, with all applied markers, the printed minute track and the “AAA / 19 Jewels” signature intact and legible; the lume plots have aged to a warm cream consistent with the watch’s age. The hands are complete and match the dial. The stainless steel cushion case is solid, showing honest light surface wear and minor softening to the polished flanks from decades of use. The acrylic crystal is clear. The vintage steel bracelet shows corresponding light wear with a few surface marks on the (unsigned) clasp cover. The day-date advances correctly and the crown winds and sets smoothly.
