Description

HIMURO KYOSUKE vintage quartz watch
JAPANESE ROCK LEGEND!

Himuro Kyosuke (氷室京介) is not a watchmaker — he is one of the biggest rock stars Japan has ever produced. As the frontman of BOØWY, the band that rewrote the rules of Japanese rock in the 1980s, and then as a chart-topping solo artist from 1988 onward, Himuro commanded the kind of devotion that fills the Tokyo Dome.

That devotion had an official home: KING SWING, Kyosuke Himuro’s official fan club — still running today. Like many Japanese fan clubs of its era, KING SWING produced exclusive goods for its members, and this watch is exactly that: an official fan-club wristwatch, never sold in any shop, made only for club members.

About the KING SWING Fan Club

KING SWING has been the official Kyosuke Himuro fan club since the late 1980s, publishing member newsletters and producing member-only goods — from tour books to novelty items like this wristwatch. Fan-club pieces were made in limited quantities, distributed within Japan only, and almost never surface outside the country.

About This Watch

A gold-tone dress watch with a surprising amount going on for a piece of fan-club merchandise. The white dial carries black Roman numerals, HIMURO KYOSUKE and KING Swing signatures in twin gilt circles, a moonphase display at 12 o’clock and a rotating zodiac calendar aperture at 6 o’clock, marked “Precision Quartz”. The case-back is engraved with a crescent-moon-and-triangle emblem above the name HÏMURÖ KYOSUKE. Inside is a simple one-jewel quartz movement with a fresh Renata 371 battery fitted during service. It comes on a vintage black leather strap with a gold-tone buckle.

Condition Report

Dial is excellent — clean and bright, with crisp printing and no staining. The gold-tone case shows only light signs of age: a few tiny spots to the plating on the bezel and lugs, visible in the macro photos but barely on the wrist. Crystal is clear. The vintage black leather strap shows honest wear — surface creasing and softened edges — and is perfectly usable, though a fresh strap would dress the watch up further.

Watch went through a recent service by a professional watch technician and keeps good time.

Comes complete with vintage leather strap*.

(*)Note: The vintage strap shows wear from age (see product images). We recommend adding a new lug width matched leather strap with your order.

Why Collectors Want This Watch Today

This is a crossover piece — it speaks to vintage-watch collectors and to fans of Japanese rock in equal measure. BOØWY remains one of the most influential bands in Japanese music history, and Himuro’s fan base is famously devoted. Official KING SWING goods were never sold at retail, so pieces like this changed hands only among club members — and while researching this listing we could not find a single other example offered for sale anywhere. We don’t expect to get another one.

About the artist

Kyosuke Himuro (氷室京介, born 1960 in Takasaki, Gunma) fronted BOØWY from 1981 to 1988 — the band that defined the sound and look of Japanese rock in the 1980s, and whose farewell shows at the newly opened Tokyo Dome in April 1988 are the stuff of legend. Going solo that same year, Himuro strung together a run of chart-topping albums and arena tours that kept him at the very top of Japanese rock through the 1990s and beyond.

His official fan club, KING SWING, has accompanied that career from the start and is still active today. Club members received exclusive newsletters and member-only goods — including, in the early 1990s, this moonphase wristwatch. As watches they were simple; as memorabilia they are a small, tangible piece of Japanese rock history.
