About Start brand
Start / Старт
Start was one of the Soviet watch names shared by more than one factory. In the 1950s both the Second Moscow Watch Factory and the Petrodvorets Watch Factory put it on men’s watches, each using the brand to widen its range of men’s models.
The Second Moscow Starts are the bolder of the two: modern, assertive designs in cases about 37mm across. Measured against the small movement inside, no other Soviet watch of the 1950s had a larger case. They run on the 17-jewel caliber 2602, which has cap jewels on the escapement but no shock protection. For a short time in the late 1950s and early 1960s the factory also made Starts in aluminium cases painted gold, an unusual case type that was never produced in large numbers. Export models and commemorative editions, including ones for the 1957 Youth Festival and the Kazakh SSR in 1960, were made as well.
Petrodvorets Starts share the look of the factory’s other brands of the period, such as Svet and Mayak, and the later designs lead directly into the first Raketa watches. They use the shock-resistant 16-jewel caliber 2603, which has no cap jewels on the escapement.
Both factories retired the Start name in the early 1960s. Second Moscow went on to make Slava watches exclusively, while Petrodvorets moved all production to Raketa.
