About Serdobsk Watch Factory

Serdobsk Watch Factory / Сердобский часовой завод «Маяк»

The Mayak clocks were built in Serdobsk, in the Penza region. The factory dates from 17 November 1943, when an order of the USSR People’s Commissariat of Mortar Armament called for a plant there to make alarm clocks and table clocks under the name State Serdobsk Watch Factory No. 5. Its planned output was 400,000 miniature alarm clocks a year, plus 100,000 table clocks built on the same movement. It was equipped with machinery brought from the Second Moscow and Chistopol watch factories.

The first clocks, from 1944, were weight-driven. Striking and cuckoo movements followed from 1952, and in 1954 came the ходики wall clock with a cat’s eyes that moved across the dial, along with a children’s “Young Watchmaker” assembly kit. The factory took up balance clocks with a seven-day wind in 1957 and electromechanical wall clocks from 1965. Dials from the plant are marked СЧЗ.

The «Маяк» name was in use by the early 1960s: in 1963 Yuri Gagarin sent the works a written greeting on its twentieth anniversary, addressed to the director of the Маяк plant.

Cuckoo clocks became the factory’s signature product. By 1993 it had made 15 million of them, more than a million of which were exported to 44 countries, including the United States, and the «Шалаш» model was awarded the Soviet State Quality Mark in 1980.

Capacity shrank from 1995 and wages went unpaid, and ZAO «СЧЗ» was wound up in 2004. A shopping centre named «Маяк», a technopark and a business incubator now occupy the former works.
