Description
Soviet mechanical Slava wrist watch with day & date, 26 jewels
MADE IN USSR!
Handsome cushion-case Slava with a green gradient dial – bright olive at the centre, shading to deep green at the edges – textured double baton markers, lumed baton hands, and a vertical day-date window at 6 o’clock, the weekday in red and black above the date.
Lovely vintage watch made by 2nd Moscow Watch factory, USSR.
The dial is signed in English – “SLAVA”, “26 jewels”, “MADE IN USSR” – the export version, and the day disc reads in English too. The chrome-plated cushion case has a brushed top surface with polished sides and a steel snap-on case back carrying the serial number 257396. The front of the case shows scratches and small spots of plating loss along the lower edge; the underside around the case back has heavy plating loss with rust and pitting – please see the photos.
The watch is mechanical and does not need batteries to operate.
Original Soviet Slava watch has mechanical lever movement and manual winding. Caliber 2428 runs on two mainspring barrels – a Slava speciality – and shows the weekday and the date. The small pusher at 2 o’clock advances the date quickly.

The case back carries a hand-engraved presentation inscription in Russian – the name «Пилипенко Р.Н.» (R.N. Pilipenko) around the rim and, in the centre, «З-д им. К. Либкнехта» (the K. Liebknecht Works) above a flourish signature. The rest of the rim inscription is worn and only partly legible; it appears to read «Ударнику 10 пятилетки» – “to a shock worker of the 10th Five-Year Plan” (1976–1980) – udarnik, or shock worker, was the Soviet honorary title for a worker who consistently exceeded the production quota.

About the watch factory

Slava (Russian: Cлава, meaning “Glory”) watches were classic “civil” Russian watches commonly referred to as “Slava Lava!”.
The Slava factory (known originally as the Second Moscow Watch Factory) was the second non-military watch maker established in the Soviet Union, in 1924.
The watches of this brand have always been meant for civilian consumption, without military or aerospace pretensions. As of today the factory no longer produces.
