Before quartz took full control of the watch market, a brilliant, short-lived era of horology birthed the hybrid electromechanical watch. The Citizen Cosmotron is the best-known Japanese example of that transition. Combining a conventional balance wheel with a battery-powered transistorized circuit in place of a mainspring and escapement, the series kept the ticking seconds hand of a mechanical watch and replaced the wound spring with a battery. Beat rates varied by caliber: the early X8 movements ran at conventional mechanical speed, and only the last 78-series Cosmotrons of 1972 reached a genuine 36,000 bph high beat.

Description

The X8 Cosmotron was Japan’s first transistorized electronic watch, introduced in 1966-67, and this example was made in October 1970 – ten months after Seiko’s Astron put quartz on sale, and a few years before quartz ended the electronic-balance experiment altogether. It is driven by a conventional balance wheel, but the balance is pushed by an electromagnetic pulse from a transistorized circuit instead of a mainspring and escapement, so the seconds hand ticks like a mechanical watch while the power comes from a battery.

This example is unusually complete. It has a silver sunburst dial, sharp brushed and polished surfaces on its cushion-shaped case, and it still carries its original Citizen paper hangtag and the red factory inspection sticker – PASSED / JWC11 – intact on the case back.
