Manufactured on Chistopolsky Watch Factory “VOSTOK”, USSR.<\/p>\n

The company was appointed an official supplier of watches for the Defence Department of the Soviet Union in 1965. This year also marks the creation of the well known Komandirskie (“Commander’s”) watch.<\/p>\n

The experience gained through development of the army watch led to the Amphibia, a stainless-steel watch able to withstand a 200 meters depth (20ATM).<\/p>\n

Watches sold to the military were marked “\u0417\u0410\u041a\u0410\u0417 \u041c\u041e \u0421\u0421\u0421\u0420,” meaning “Ordered by the Ministry of Defence of the USSR.” These models were sold exclusively through Voentorg stores, which catered to military personnel with identification only. \u00a0Today, these models have become sought-after collectibles.<\/p>\n

The sinking of TITANIC earlier that year brought attention to lack of regulations in the field.<\/p>\n

This act stipulated that radio rooms on the shore or any sea-going ship must be manned 24 hours by trained operators listening for distress signals.<\/p>\n

Not specifically detailed in the act itself, but agreed upon later by countries around the world, these intervals would last for three minutes and occur at the top of the hour and half-hour.<\/p>\n

During these time periods, all radio communication would cease as operators would simply listen for distress signals from a broad range of frequencies. Later amendments required these listening intervals every fifteen minutes for better coverage and reduced risk of missing a distress call.<\/p>\n

This affected the dial design of clocks in radio rooms – at every quarter, there would be a three-minute sliver marked in contrasting color to clearly identify the \u201cradio silence\u201d periods.\u00a0 *source<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n
