was a meeting between\u00a0United States President<\/span><\/a>\u00a0George H. W. Bush<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Soviet General Secretary<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Mikhail Gorbachev<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on December 2\u20133, 1989, just a few weeks after the\u00a0fall of the Berlin Wall<\/span><\/a>. It followed a meeting that included\u00a0Ronald Reagan<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in New York in December 1988. During the summit, Bush and Gorbachev declared an end to the\u00a0Cold War<\/span><\/a>, although whether it was truly such is a matter of debate. News reports of the time referred to the Malta Summit as one of the most important since\u00a0World War II<\/span><\/a>, when British prime minister\u00a0Winston Churchill<\/span><\/a>, Soviet General Secretary\u00a0Joseph Stalin<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and US President\u00a0Franklin D. Roosevelt<\/span><\/a>\u00a0agreed on a\u00a0post-war plan<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for Europe at the\u00a0Yalta Conference<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The meetings took place in the\u00a0Mediterranean<\/span><\/a>, off the island of\u00a0Malta<\/span><\/a>. The Soviet delegation used the missile cruiser\u00a0Slava<\/i><\/span><\/a>,<\/span> while the US delegation had their sleeping quarters aboard\u00a0USS\u00a0Belknap<\/i><\/span><\/a>.<\/span> The ships were anchored in a\u00a0roadstead<\/span><\/a>\u00a0off the coast of\u00a0Marsaxlokk<\/span><\/a>. Stormy weather and choppy seas resulted in some meetings being cancelled or rescheduled, and gave rise to the moniker the “Seasick Summit” among international media. The meetings ultimately took place aboard\u00a0Maksim Gorkiy<\/i><\/span><\/a>, a Soviet\u00a0cruise ship<\/span><\/a>\u00a0chartered to West German tour company\u00a0Phoenix Reisen<\/span><\/a>, which anchored in the harbor at\u00a0Marsaxlokk<\/span><\/a>.
